      • Transparency: Kyanite is transparent to translucent. 
      • Refractive index: Kyanite has a refractive index of 1.71–1.75. 
      • Hardness: Kyanite has a hardness of 4–7.5 on the Mohs scale. However, kyanite is pleochroic, meaning it has two different hardness values on perpendicular axes. When tested lengthways, kyanite grades 4–5 on the Mohs scale, but when tested across the width, it grades 6–7.
